Reach Out and Read

ACHF is continually seeking funds to sustain a reading program which began in 2006. The funds allow purchasing of books which number over 10,000 annually to be given to children, age 6 mos. to 5 years. Doctors are teaching parents about their children's developmental milestones. Parents are encouraged to read daily to their children when they are given a book at each well child visit. We strive to purchase books that are age-appropriate, culturally sensitive, sturdy and colorful.

Goal

  • To reach all families with children who come to ACMC clinics for wellness care to stress the importance of early childhood literacy development and encourage parents to foster reading as a primary tool in their child's development.

Objectives

  • Train medical providers about the Reach Out and Read book program which includes children's developmental assessment and parent education.
  • Provide a book to each child during a well child exam from age 6 mos. to 5 years so children will have opportunity for reading readiness by Kindergarten.
  • Be mindful of our diverse patient population by selecting books which are culturally sensitive and bilingual whenever possible.
